MY ROLE

Lead Product Designer, UX Researcher, Brand Designer

CHALLENGE

Many water treatment websites prioritize products over education, making it difficult for homeowners to understand their water concerns, identify the right solution, and feel confident contacting a provider.

Ultimate Water Solutions wanted to differentiate itself through transparency, education, and a more approachable customer experience while modernizing its brand and digital presence.

WHAT I DID

Conducted homeowner research, defined the brand strategy, redesigned the website experience, created the information architecture, developed educational content, and designed an AI-assisted support experience that guides homeowners toward the right solution.

RESULT

Created a research-driven digital experience centered around education, trust, and self-service decision making. The new website helps homeowners better understand their water concerns, identify potential solutions, and engage with the company more confidently through interactive tools and guided experiences.

Understanding How Homeowners Make Decisions

Before designing the experience, I wanted to understand how homeowners evaluate water treatment providers and what information they need before making contact. I conducted interviews with homeowners ranging from 31–81 years old across suburban, rural, and small-town communities. The findings revealed that homeowners were often overwhelmed by technical information, uncertain which solution they needed, and frustrated by sales-first experiences.

Competitive Analysis

To better understand where Ultimate Water Solutions could differentiate, I evaluated both traditional water treatment companies and newer wellness-focused water brands.

Traditional providers communicated expertise and credibility but often felt corporate, technical, and difficult to distinguish from one another.

Wellness-focused brands felt approachable and lifestyle-oriented but frequently lacked the authority and trust homeowners expected when making major home investments.

This revealed a significant opportunity to occupy a unique position within the market.

Positioning Opportunity

Rather than competing solely as another water treatment company, Ultimate Water Solutions had the opportunity to become something more valuable: A trusted guide to healthier water and healthier living.

The goal was to combine the credibility and expertise of traditional providers with the accessibility and lifestyle focus of modern wellness brands.

This positioning became the foundation for the brand, messaging, website structure, and overall customer experience.

Designing for Education Before Sales

Research consistently showed that homeowners wanted to understand their water concerns before being presented with products or services.

Rather than leading with equipment or sales messaging, the experience was designed around education, problem discovery, and guided decision-making.

To support this behavior, I created a series of self-service tools that help homeowners learn about their water concerns, identify potential solutions, and feel more confident before speaking with a specialist. The goal was to position Ultimate Water Solutions as a trusted advisor rather than a sales-first company.

Extending Support with AI

Research also revealed that many homeowners had questions they wanted answered before contacting a company representative.

To support these users, I developed an AI-powered assistant trained to provide educational guidance and answer common water quality questions.

The assistant was designed to help homeowners understand:

  • Common water quality issues

  • Hard water symptoms

  • Iron staining

  • Sulfur odors

  • Drinking water concerns

  • Well water treatment

  • Filtration options

  • Water testing recommendations

  • Service area questions

  • The Ultimate Water Solutions process

Rather than replacing human consultation, the assistant serves as an educational resource that helps homeowners learn about their options and determine when professional guidance may be beneficial.

The experience extends the company's education-first approach while providing immediate support throughout the customer journey.

The outcome

The final experience transforms Ultimate Water Solutions from a traditional service provider website into an educational platform designed around homeowner needs.

By combining research, positioning strategy, brand design, website design, and AI-assisted support, the experience helps homeowners better understand their water concerns, identify relevant solutions, and engage with greater confidence.
