Building Trust in Seconds for a Financial Newsletter
Designing a research-backed landing page experience that transformed uncertainty into confidence, helping investors quickly understand Earnings Alpha's value and doubling newsletter signups.
CHALLENGE
Earnings Alpha needed to establish credibility with first-time visitors and clearly communicate its value proposition in a highly skeptical market.
Initial research revealed that potential subscribers struggled to understand the offering, questioned its credibility, and lacked confidence in the product's methodology.
WHAT I DID
Conducted user research, synthesized insights, identified trust and clarity gaps, redesigned the information architecture and messaging strategy, developed multiple design directions, and validated solutions through A/B testing.
RESULT
-
2X increase in newsletter signups
-
64% preference for the winning design
-
72% immediate understanding of the value proposition

Understanding Why Users Didn't Trust the Product
Before designing the experience, I wanted to understand what investors needed before they would trust a financial product enough to subscribe. Research revealed that users were actively looking for:
-
Clear methodology (60%)
-
Actionable market insights (50%)
-
Proof of value through examples and performance (40%)
Without these elements, users struggled to justify subscribing, leading to high bounce rates and low conversion.

Competitive Analysis
To understand how Earnings Alpha could differentiate itself, I analyzed a range of financial newsletters, investing platforms, and market research products.
Financial Content Platforms:
Strengths:
-
Easy to understand
-
Highly engaging
-
Accessible to newer investors
Weaknesses:
-
Often lacked depth
-
Limited credibility signals
-
Generic recommendations
Advanced Trading Platforms:
Strengths:
-
Deep analysis
-
Strong authority
-
Professional credibility
-
Weaknesses:
-
Overwhelming interfaces
-
Steep learning curves
-
Difficult for casual investors

Positioning Opportunity
One of the strongest findings was that trust was heavily influenced by presentation and transparency.
Participants consistently cited:
-
Professional design
-
Methodology transparency
-
Performance history
-
Real examples
-
Testimonials
Many users specifically requested proof points before they would consider subscribing.
Research Insights → Design Strategy
The findings made it clear that the problem wasn't simply visual design.
Users needed:
-
Immediate clarity
-
Proof of expertise
-
Methodology transparency
-
Reduced signup friction
-
Stronger credibility signals
These insights became the foundation for every design decision moving forward.

Designing Within Platform Constraints
The experience was built within Beehiiv, which introduced limitations around layout flexibility and customization.
Rather than working against these constraints, I focused on maximizing clarity through content structure, hierarchy, and messaging.
The limitations ultimately reinforced a design philosophy centered on simplicity and effectiveness.
Testing Newsletter Concepts
The website was only one part of the user journey.
Because the product itself is delivered through newsletters, I also explored multiple newsletter concepts to understand which format users found most valuable and trustworthy.
Three distinct concepts were developed and tested.
Variant 1: Focused on market news and educational insights.
Variant 2: Focused on stock opportunities and recommendations.
Variant 3 (Winning): Balanced market context, actionable opportunities, and supporting rationale.
The winning concept consistently outperformed the alternatives because it balanced education, transparency, and actionable insights.
Users reported that it felt:
-
More trustworthy
-
Easier to scan
-
More valuable
-
More professional

Final Experience
The redesigned platform transformed Earnings Alpha from a low-trust concept into a credible acquisition channel.
By combining user research, competitive analysis, positioning strategy, UX design, and concept validation, the final experience created a stronger foundation for growth, engagement, and long-term retention.
This project reinforced the importance of designing for trust in financial products.
The most effective solution wasn't adding more information, it was creating clarity, reducing uncertainty, and validating assumptions through research and testing.
By grounding every design decision in user needs, the experience successfully increased subscriber growth, engagement, and retention while positioning Earnings Alpha as a more credible and approachable investing platform.
Results
The combined redesign improved both website performance and user perception.
Outcomes:
-
2x increase in subscriber sign-ups
-
Higher engagement through improved content hierarchy
-
+28% retention driven by stronger credibility
-
+7% open rate
The project demonstrated that trust isn't built through visual design alone. It comes from creating clarity across every touchpoint, from the landing page to the content users receive after subscribing.
